FAQ

1. Patterns & Downloads

• How do I download my pattern after purchase?

After you finish the checkout, you’ll get an email with a download link. You can also log in to your account on Etsy, Ravelry, or juliapiro.com and download your digital knitting pattern anytime.

• What happens if I lose my download link?

No problem. You can download your digital knitting pattern again from your account anytime. If you bought as a guest on Etsy and can’t find the email, write to me at info@juliapiro.com and I will resend the link.

• Do I need special software to open your PDF patterns?

No. You can open your PDF knitting pattern with any basic PDF reader on your phone, tablet, or computer. Most devices have one already installed, so you can view your pattern right away.

• Are video tutorials included with every pattern?

Most newer patterns come with a step-by-step knitting tutorial you can follow step by step. Check the pattern description to be sure, since a few older patterns may not include one. You can also watch all my tutorials on my YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/@Juliapiro/videos

2. Sizing & Adjustments

• How do I choose the right size?

Check the size chart in each pattern and compare it to your body measurements. Choose the size that matches your bust or chest the best. My knitting patterns for beginners include ease recommendations, so you can see how the garment is meant to fit.

• What if I’m between two sizes?

If you’re between sizes, choose the smaller one. Most of my knitting patterns for beginners include positive ease, so the fit should still feel comfortable. You can also adjust the sleeve or body length as you knit to get the result you want.

• How can I make the sleeves or body longer?

You can keep knitting until you reach the length you want, then continue with the pattern’s finishing steps. I include notes in each knitting pattern showing where you can safely add or remove length. If you plan to make it longer, make sure you have extra yarn. Learn more: The simple sleeve modification

• What if my gauge is different from the pattern?

If your gauge is different, your yarn might be thinner or thicker than the one used in the pattern, or your knitting tension may be tighter or looser. You can use my free Gauge Problem Solver for beginner knitters to see how to adjust your gauge step by step: Gauge Problem Solver

3. Yarn & Materials

• Can I substitute another yarn brand?

Yes. You can use another yarn brand as long as it matches the weight and gauge listed in the knitting pattern. Knit a small swatch first to make sure the fabric feels the way you want. For more options, you can check yarnsub.com.

• How much yarn do I need for my size?

Each knitting pattern includes a yarn chart that lists the amounts for every size. Look for the color that matches your size in the yarn section. If you want to make the sleeves or body longer, adding one extra skein is usually a good idea.

• Do I need exactly the same fiber content (wool vs cotton)?

You don’t need to use the exact same fiber, but your yarn should match the gauge of the pattern when you knit a swatch. Different fibers behave differently, so keep that in mind. For example, cotton is heavier and can stretch more, especially in larger sizes.

• Can I knit with yarn from my stash?

Yes. As long as the yarn weight and gauge match the knitting pattern, you can use what you already have. Knit a small swatch first to see how the texture and drape look with your chosen yarn.

4. Techniques & Tutorials

• Are your patterns beginner-friendly?

Yes. My patterns are designed with knitting for beginners in mind. If you know how to knit, purl, cast on, and bind off, you can follow along. I guide you through each step in simple language, and most patterns include a full video tutorial.

• What skills do I need before starting your patterns?

You only need the basics: casting on, knitting, purling, and binding off. Everything else is explained in the PDF knitting pattern or shown in the video tutorial, so you can learn as you go.

• Do you explain all abbreviations in the pattern?

Yes. Every pattern includes a full list of abbreviations with clear explanations. Many of these steps are also demonstrated in the knitting video tutorial if you prefer visual guidance.

• What if I don’t know how to do short rows?

That’s completely fine. Some patterns for beginner knitters don’t use short rows, and in others they’re optional. I show the method in the video tutorial so you can try it, and if it doesn’t feel right yet, you can skip them.

5. Orders & Payments

• What payment methods do you accept?

You can pay for the knitting pattern with major credit and debit cards, PayPal, Apple Pay, and Google Pay.

• Can I get a refund on a digital pattern?

Digital knitting patterns are not refundable, but if something went wrong, please email me at info@juliapiro.com. I’m always happy to look at your situation individually and find a solution.

• How can I join your test knits?

I announce all upcoming test knits in my newsletter and on Instagram. You can follow me there or subscribe to Esenotes, where I share sign-up links and details.

• Where can I ask for help if I get stuck?

You can email me at info@juliapiro.com if you need help. I’m happy to answer questions about any of my patterns, and the video tutorials for beginner knitters included in most designs often help with the common steps.

7. Care & Washing

• How should I wash my knitted sweater?

Most hand-knits should be washed gently in lukewarm water. Let the fabric soak, rinse it carefully, and lay it flat to dry. Avoid rubbing or twisting it, and always check the yarn label for the exact care instructions. Read more about it here: https://juliapiro.com/blogs/esenotes/what-if-your-knit-could-stay-perfect-forever

• What is wet blocking and do I need to do it?

Wet blocking means soaking your finished piece, shaping it gently, and letting it dry flat. It helps the stitches relax and gives the garment a smoother look. I recommend it for most knitted projects. Read more about wet-blocking here https://juliapiro.com/blogs/esenotes/think-wet-blocking-is-optional

• What detergent should I use for hand-knits?

Use a mild detergent or wool wash made for delicate fibers. Regular laundry detergents can be too harsh and may damage the wool. I personally use Eucalan.

• Can I machine-wash my handmade sweater?

Only if the yarn label says it’s machine-washable. If it is, use a gentle cycle and a mesh bag. Most natural fibers last longer and stay softer when they’re washed by hand.
